No, I love long and rambly responses! I am so attracted to fics that explore what happened during the Year, and mostly it's because I suspect that it was just as dark as any fic writer could ever take it. DW couldn't really go there because it's a family show, but it didn't shy away from saying these were slave camps, these people were slaves, these other people were murdered, Jack died over and over again. And there was a very dark sexual element to the whole thing that quite simply gave me the chills, and not in a good way.

I thought RTD was pretty good about showing that SOMETHING happened to Jack that changed him profoundly during that year, and read into it what you will. I knew writing my own piece that I didn't want to shy away from the realities of life during wartime. I was very much influenced by news reports of the treatment of women and prisoners in the DRC, the Balkans, and the Sudan.

I thought the process through which Jack starts to heal in your fic was so incredibly realistic and heartbreaking. His isolation and paranoia from the team, his absolute despair over finding out about being pregnant and being so conflicted over what to do about it, the Doctor standing in almost as right-to-life proxy. Just, everything read as so true, and I respect you really kind of a lot for being willing to go there.

And just, the last line when he throws his head back and starts to laugh...I cried, really, because one of my absolute favorite Jack moments is when he's laughing with Gwen in the shooting range in Everything Changes. Just...Jack, being himself, open, and unguarded. It's one of the first and only times we see it in Torchwood, and every. single. time. knowing what I know now, it makes me cry. And your fic did too with the same kind of moment. But it's damn good.
