the words in the quiet

“You were amazing today,” Kakashi murmurs, wrapping his arms around Naruto’s waist.

Naruto tilts his head to the side, baring his neck for the kisses Kakashi’s pressing against them. He keeps cleaning his kunai nonchalantly, even as the kisses turn into little nips.

“Thanks! I think my chakra control’s getting better, right?” Naruto says cheerfully.

“It is,” Kakashi says. “As are your tactics and strategies. You’ve become an excellent leader, Naruto. I’m so very proud of you.”

Naruto drops his kunai and wriggles around in Kakashi’s hold. “It’s weird hearing you say that like this,” he protests. He can feel his face heating up, and he knows the blush goes across his cheeks and all the way to his ears. He can’t help it; whenever Kakashi gets in these moods, everything that comes out of his mouth is always so embarrassing.

It’s also wonderful to hear, which Naruto will never admit.

“It’s dangerous if others know how I feel,” Kakashi says, unzipping Naruto’s jacket. He leans forward and mouths along Naruto’s collarbone. “So when we’re on a mission, I have to save it all up, all the joy you bring me –”

“Stop talking already,” Naruto whines, burying his face in Kakashi’s hair.

Kakashi pulls Naruto’s tank top over his head. “Just one more thing, then,” he says, nuzzling closer. Naruto rocks against him with a pleased whine, and when Kakashi parts his lips, Naruto presses his own to them, stealing and secreting away the words he already knows.
