Personally, I can't fathom starting a story without doing some form of research. The amount and type of research that goes into each story varies, of course, but I did do prep work for most of my stories. It always makes me twitch when I come across a story with an obvious canonical/historical/etc error - makes me think you don't care much about your story, if you're not even willing to try and get it right...
