The fantasy thing just sort of happens, doesn't it? It's definitely true of me and my best friend. It's that or romance, and I never got into romance (tried a few and more or less gagged my way through). I read pretty much anything I could get my hands on when I was a kid, so I had a passing familiarity with fantasy - like Narnia, I think I read those when I was ten or so - but I never consciously associated it with the genre, y'know? Then I when I was around twelve or thirteen, I went to another school with an amazing library and discovered Dragonlance (fell in love with Raistlin and Tas) and also Mercedes Lackey, which besides being a great introduction to fantasy, was also what introduced me to slash. I mean, that's another thing I'd never consciously thought of before, so. =D
You should definitely read Changing Planes - it's sci-fi; a little funny, a little morbid, a little quirky, a lot brilliant. Also, give Earthsea a shot! Bet you'll like it. I'm actually currently working my way through City of Illusions at the moment. It's funny; the one book of hers I'm not that fond of is the one that gets lots of acclaim - The Dispossessed. But that said, the thing I like most about LeGuin is that she writes brilliant stories. I mean, you can talk about theories and race and gender politics and whatever else you want, and they're all very applicable and obviuosly important to her works - but they're also damn good stories, which a lot of other socially-motivated works aren't.
