“Danny wants a sister for his Christmas present,” Ianto announces.
Jack looks up and blinks in bewilderment. “Yeah, pretty sure that’s not happening.”
Ianto tumbles into bed with a groan. “I tried – Jack. Jack, I think maybe he needs to go back to his therapist.”
Jack frowns, stacking his paperwork into a neat pile and getting up from the desk. “What’s wrong?”
“He said he misses Emily,” Ianto mumbles into his pillow.
It takes a moment for Jack to place the name, but when he does, things immediately make sense. Emily, of course – Danny’s older sister, who’d been one of the victims of the Night Travellers. Who’d been right next to him, from what little he’d said of that night, when their breaths had been ripped from them.
“Adopting another kid’s probably the worst thing we could do, then,” Jack sighs, sitting down on the edge of the bed, next to Ianto. “Can’t bring another kid into this household if he hasn’t dealt with it yet.”
“… Another kid?” Ianto asks, after a long pause.
Jack clears his throat. “Well. Maybe. Eventually.”
Ianto sits up and gives him a small smile. “You did mention possibly having our own,” he says tentatively.
“Possibly,” Jack says, looking anywhere but at Ianto’s face.
Ianto huffs out a quiet laugh and pulls Jack down on top of him. “I’ll make an appointment tomorrow, for Danny to see his therapist,” he says, pressing his face against Jack’s neck.
“Yeah, okay. He’s a strong kid – he’ll get through this,” Jack says, and traces the edge of Ianto’s collar. “He’s got a strong dad to show him how.”
Ianto’s lips curve against Jack’s neck. “Yes,” he agrees, tightening his grip on Jack. “He does.”
